Frontier Technology, Inc. is awarded a Phase I SBIR Contract for Request for Improved Electronics Maintenance Through Tester Prognostics

Goleta, CA - November 13, 2013 - Frontier Technology, Inc. (FTI) has been awarded a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program contract by the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division on Topic Number N132-091 for the Request for Improved Electronics Maintenance Through Tester Prognostics.  FTI will develop innovative tools and processes required to leverage electronics prognostics and health management in Navy Automatic Test System (ATS) environments to enhance electronics maintenance.   The goal is to combine the Unit Under Test (UUT) data and system knowledge collected by the ATS with that available from the UUT to enhance system prognostics and improve operational availability of the UUT while controlling maintenance costs.  The FTI team will apply a foundation of data fusion, advanced diagnostics and predictive analytic technologies to develop and demonstrate a proof of concept system for one of the members of the Department of Defense family of testers.  The proof of concept will focus on information obtained from UUTs and Automatic Test Equipment (ATE) test results.

Frontier Technology, Inc. (FTI) has been awarded a Phase I Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program contract by the Air Force Research Laboratory on Topic Number AF13-AT01 for Multiphysics-Based Sensor Fusion.  FTI, and its research partners the University of Florida and Lockheed Martin will develop new multiphysics-based sensor fusion algorithms which map disparate sensor fields into a single common multiphysics-based representation.  This model can then be used to produce higher quality sensor fusion data products. 

The goals of the Phase I contract are to identify relevant technological applications (e.g., biomedical, automotive, aerospace, acoustical, geo-mechanical, Radio Frequency, robotics, machinery monitoring); develop baseline multiphysics simulation models encompassing selected measurement observables; and derive multiphysics-based sensor fusion algorithms and demonstrate effectiveness using synthetic data sets.

Frontier Technology, Inc. (FTI) has been awarded a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program contract by the Air Force Research Laboratory on Topic Number AF121-185 for Detecting, Diagnosing and Predicting Impact of High Priority Faults in Electromechanical Actuation (EMA) Systems for Next-Generation Military Aircraft.  FTI, in partnership with the Moog Aircraft Group, will demonstrate on an embedded EMA controller and actuator, under realistic operational conditions, that real-time Prognostic and Health Management (PHM) technology can detect indicators of future failures, diagnose the cause of the problem, predict mission and component impact and cause corrective action to be taken.  The PHM technology developed will be compatible with sixth-generation energy optimized aircraft.  FTI will also extend the reliability analysis initiated during Phase I to show how goals for Probability of Loss of Function and Probability of Loss of Control are positively impacted by the application of PHM technology.  This contract expands the capabilities of FTI’s NormNet® PHM technology and will be applicable to a wide set of actuators, control systems, and operational scenarios.

Frontier Technology, Inc. is awarded a Phase I SBIR Contract for Decision Support Technologies for Weapon System Sustainment Processes and Life Cycle Investment

Frontier Technology, Inc. (FTI) has been awarded a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program contract by the Air Force Materiel Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio on Topic Number AF131-116 for Decision Support Technologies for Weapon System Sustainment Processes and Life Cycle Investment.  The objective is to develop technologies which extend sustainment modeling and simulation capabilities to support improved investment decisions throughout the weapon system lifecycle.

This will be accomplished by providing comprehensive, structured, integrated, and repeatable simulation capabilities to model detailed sustainment processes and factors encompassing unit maintenance, supply chain management, depot operations, constrained resources and reliability, availability, maintainability, and supportability (RAMS).  This will provide the capabilities and support necessary to ensure that interactions and dependencies across the enterprise are captured and addressed within the contexts of overall system readiness and cost.

Frontier Technology, Inc. is awarded a Phase II SBIR Contract for Improvements in Spacecraft Assembly, Integration and Test
Goleta, CA- January 2, 2013

Frontier Technology, Inc. (FTI) received a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program contract by the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) for Improvements in Spacecraft Assembly, Integration and Test (AI&T).  The focus of this topic is on space-based systems with particular emphasis on space-based optical systems.  The objective is to significantly reduce the cost and time required for the AI&T of future MDA Space Systems.    

FTI will mature and demonstrate the conceptual design developed in Phase I.  Tasks shall include development of a critical design and a detailed demonstration of key technical parameters that can lead to a detailed performance analysis of the technology.

Frontier Technology, Inc. is awarded a Phase III SBIR Contract for Procurement of a Tool Suite for Decision Support Technologies

Goleta, CA – October 8, 2012 – Frontier Technology, Inc. (FTI) was awarded a $51,000,000 contract.  The award will provide for the procurement of a tool suite for decision support technologies.  Work location will be determined with each order, with an estimated completion date of September 25, 2018.  The bid was solicited through the Internet, with one bid received.  The National Guard Bureau, Buckhannon, W.Va., is the contracting activity (W912L8-12-D-0031).



Frontier Technology, Inc. is awarded a Phase I SBIR Contract for Automation of Satellite On-Orbit Checkout and Calibration Process
Goleta, CA- October 2, 2012

Frontier Technology, Inc. (FTI) has been awarded a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program contract by the Air Force Research Laboratory on Topic Number AF121-087 for Automation of Satellite On-Orbit Checkout and Calibration Process.  The objective is to develop an automated electro-optical infrared (EO-IR) sensor recalibration system that will respond in real time to changes in the sensor operating condition or to external cues that would trigger a recalibration. 

Development of these technologies will enable automation and time minimization of the satellite on-orbit checkout and calibration process in support of Operationally Responsive Space class systems.

Frontier Technology, Inc. (FTI) has been awarded a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program contract by the Air Force Research Laboratory's Space Vehicles Directorate, Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico on Topic Number AF121-085 for Advanced Algorithms for Space Based Next Generation Infrared Sensor Exploitation.  The objective is to develop advanced algorithms to improve multiple, closely-spaced object detection and state vector estimation for space-based, next-generation infrared (IR) sensors viewing cluttered scenes.

Frontier Technology, Inc. (FTI) has been awarded a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program contract by the Air Force Research Laboratory on Topic Number AF121-185 for Detecting, Diagnosing and Predicting Impact of High Priority Faults in Electromechanical Actuation (EMA) Systems for Next-Generation Military Aircraft.  The objective is to develop and demonstrate electrical and mechanical Prognostic Health Management (PHM) technology that is integrated with an aircraft EMA system. 

Under this contract, FTI will develop and demonstrate innovative PHM technology based on state of the art theory and algorithms to accurately detect in real-time and predict future performance and failures of electrical and mechanical faults in an EMA.  This technology will significantly improve the EMA’s reliability, safety, and maintainability by predicting and detecting EMA failure modes and parts remaining useful life.  As a result overall mission readiness can be maximized and lifecycle costs can be minimized.  This contract expands the capabilities of FTI’s NormNet® PHM technology and will be applicable to a wide set of actuators, control systems, and operational scenarios.

Frontier Technology, Inc. (FTI) has been awarded a Phase I Small Business Technology Transfer Program (STTR) contract by the Air Force Research Laboratory on Topic Number OSD11-T02 for Programming Constructs to Enable Formation of Efficient Algorithm Mapping for ExaScale Processors.  The objective is to develop new software tools for addressing the requirements of programming the emerging class of computational hardware for ExaScale computing.  The Department of Defense will benefit through reduced software production costs, and reduced overall life cycle costs through greater portability, fewer defects, and energy reduction.  Succinct expression also means fewer lines of code which allows proportionally greater productivity and reduced opportunities for costly errors.  FTI, in collaboration with the University of Florida, will co-design higher level algorithmic expressions with specific optimizations for parallelism and locality.

Frontier Technology, Inc. (FTI) was awarded a Phase II SBIR contract from the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) with the objective to develop, and integrate computer tools to provide analysis capabilities to examine system acquisition/sustainment issues and address engineering-level and supportability issues quickly, helping fleet managers/operators to prioritize requirements and select best-value investment options.  The computer tools will provide capabilities to support a Life Cycle Analysis of Alternatives and business case assessments for Navy systems enabling analysts and managers to understand the trade space for investment options, including the performance impacts of human systems integration. The primary analysis tools to be considered for enhancement and use are FTI’s commercial Integrated Cost As an Independent Variable® (I-CAIV®), and Integrated Cost Estimation® (ICE™) tools, and other analysis tools associated with the commercial Ship System Affordability Tool Suite.  In addition, sources of human performance data will be addressed, including Navy data systems such as VAMOSC and information/data from other companies that are researching aspects of human performance assessments and cost analysis.  This Phase II research effort will refine and apply the FTI affordability tool suite to multiple logistics/supportability planning and analysis needs associated with the Engineering and Supportability Decision System (ESDS) being developed by the Naval Surface Warfare Center Port Hueneme (NSWC PHD).

Frontier Technology, Inc., U.S. Army Aviation & Missile Command Quality Office Extends FTI’s Research Efforts on Product Assurance Readiness Level Tool

Frontier Technology, Inc. (FTI) has been awarded a Phase II SBIR Enhancement Contract to continue the development activities of a Product Assurance Readiness Level (PARL) Decision Aide prototype.  This contract provides funding for additional research to further identify, develop, and test enhancements to the Phase II developed prototype.
 
The initial Phase I research demonstrated the feasibility for a product assurance decision aide to synthesize product assurance data into a “readiness level” while automating the collection of information when assessing a manufactures’ compliance to a consistent Product Assurance measuring bar.  The Phase II developed the concept into a stand-alone prototype as a decision aide to automate the data collection and reporting of a product assurance readiness assessment. With the current PARL prototype, an assessing organization can capture and provide insight into the maturity of a vendor’s product assurance efforts to ensure optimal benefit and reduce program risk for Army weapon system reliability, cost effectiveness, and timely delivery. This enhancement contract will add additional capabilities to the prototyped approach that combines existing best practices, lessons learned, and new data collection methodologies with existing software technology, to build an effective decision support application with which to assess the Product Assurance Readiness Level of a US Army supplier.

Frontier Technology, Inc. Selected for Award to Devlop Responsive, Pre-Launch and on-Orbit, Electro-Optical Sensor Characterization and Calibration

Frontier Technology, Inc. (FTI) has been selected by the Air Force for award of a Phase II SBIR contract to explore new ideas for achieving a dramatic reduction in timescales for on-orbit sensor calibration and telescope pointing verification, while preserving high calibration fidelity.  The goal of this effort is to support an overall strategy for rapid and improved calibration of space Electro-Optical (E-O) sensors.  FTI will implement empirical calibration models developed in Phase I within the FTI I-SAT® software tool suite  and refine generalized radiometric and LOS calibration CONOPS.
