FTI Serves in the local YMCA

Did you know drowning is the number one preventable cause of death for African American boys? Or that, among urban youth, 69% have low or no swimming skills? How about the fact that African American urban youth ages 5-14 have a drowning rate 3 times higher than their Caucasian counterparts? To combat these statistics, the YMCA of South Hampton Roads invited FTI to sponsor a swimming program which targeted 60 kids from 3 local youth centers. Their goal? To remove obstacles (i.e. lack of transportation or equipment) and help each child learn basic swimming skills.

FTI through the 4th C, sponsored an inaugural swimming program for 60 youth from 3 urban youth centers. In addition to sponsorship, FTI staff were able to pack swim bags for participants before the start of the program, as well as celebrate with the graduates and their families at the program’s conclusion. What an incredible honor to help expand opportunities for and ensure the safety of our community’s youth! Thank you, Greenbrier YMCA for letting us be a part of this event.
